PURPOSE:To detect and classify the voltage characteristics of a diode and laser diode in a reverse direction with high accuracy, by judging the regression curve calculated from the measuring information of a reverse direction voltage value in contradistinction to a reference region. CONSTITUTION:Measuring information is operationally processed by a microcomputer 12 and, on the basis of the obtained numerical value, the regression curves VR1, VR2 in a region A before the reverse direction voltage of a laser diode 9 reaches a threshold value Vth from zero volt and the post region B thereof are calculated by a method of least squares according to a statistic processing method. Then, it is judged whether the regression curves VR1, VR2 are present within a set region (the gradient of each of the curves is within a predetermined angular region). When both curves satisfy a predetermined condition, the laser diode chip 9 is judged to be a good product and, when either one of the curves does not satisfy the condition, said chip 9 is judged to be an inferior product.
