The record player rotates the disc by using a spindle motor. The pick-up head is mounted on a carriage. The spindle motor unit and the head carriage are mechanically coupled by guide bars and a pinion gear that engages toothed racks. The pinion gear is axially coupled to a motor. When operated the carriage is moved to cause the head to pass radially over the disc. At the same time, the spindle motor assembly moves in the opposite direction to increase the relative speed.
