A mobile communication terminal having an external situation monitoring function and a controlling method thereof are provided to enable a user to confirm an external situation such as a situation in forward direction while using terminal functions through video information obtained from a camera, thus the user can actively cope with external obstacles or sudden external situation changes. A camera unit(40) obtains real-time video information which shows an external situation. If a video information request on the external situation exists, a controller(60) divides a screen of a display(20), and controls so that one piece of display information selected from SMS(Short Message Service), notepad, Internet surfing, video outputting and gaming functions and the obtained real-time video information are displayed together.
