The rake sorter is used to sort particles according to size or shape. It comprises a hollow cylinder (10) rotatable about its axis and arranged with its axis inclined to the horizontal such that particulate material (18) fed into the upper end of the cylinder moves along the bottom of the cylinder towards its lower end as the cylinder rotates. Raking teeth (20) project inwardly from the wall of the cylinder, the teeth being configured to rake through the moving particles and to capture selected particles which are distinguished from other particles by their size or shape for subsequent collection apart from the other particles.
