PURPOSE: To provide a system for monitoring a pilger rolling mill and determining whether the operating variable to inconveniently decrease the wall thickness of tubular material exists or not. CONSTITUTION: The system for monitoring the pilger rolling mill 10 having rollers 24 and 26 for reducing the diameter of the tubular material 20 on a mandrel 18 driven 38 by a crankshaft to move back and forth is composed of a linear sensor 42 which supplies a mandrel position signal connected to the mandrel 18, a rotary sensor 40 which is connected to the crankshaft and supplies a crankshaft angle signal and a processor 54 which provides a mandrel behavior signal indicating the characteristics of the diameter reduction of the tubular material by combining the mandrel position signal and the crankshaft angle signal. If the behavior signal is uniformly iterated, the diameter reduction is uniform and if the signal is irregular, the diameter reduction is irregular as well.
