Electromagnetic actuator e.g. for IC engine gas-exchange valve

The electromagnetic actuator has a housing (5) enclosing a pair of spaced electromagnets (6,7) and an armature (9), attached to the valve operating shaft (2). The armature is displaced between the opposing pole faces (10) of the electromagnets against the force of resetting springs (4,12). The actuator housing is adjustable along an axial guide (13) relative to the valve, via at least one setting device (15), e.g. a piston/cylinder device, for compensating the valve play.
