The mower housing has an opening (14) with upper area (16) in the upper wall (18) of the housing directly above the mower blade (20). A discharge flap (26) above the opening can be swivelled away from the opening when encountering an obstacle during mowing. The upper area (16) of the opening is covered by a cover flap (34) which is locked in a position covering the opening byu a locking mechanism (36) and remains locked when the discharge flap swivels out. The locking mechanism can be unlocked by an operator so that the cover flap can be moved into a position where the opening is substantially free. The opening has a side area (22) in a side wall (24) of the housing (12) so that the side area remains open to direct cut material sideways out of the housing to eg an adjoining sack. The discharge flap extends sideways out over the side area of the opening.
