The electromagnet has a ferromagnetic, wound strip core (10, 12, 18). One limb (18) carries a fine-wire, high-resistance, primary winding (20). The opposite limb (12) carries a secondary winding (16) with one- or just a few turns of low resistance. The secondary surrounds both this limb, and the water pipe. Preferred Features: The wound strip core is C-shaped (i.e. it is a C-core); or is alternatively O-shaped. It may be figure-of-eight, in a further variant resembling a common type of transformer core, with operation based on similar principles. Within the secondary coil(s) a resilient layer is greatly compressed in the installed state. The coils are potted in plastic resin. The assembly is supplied with alternating current. The pipe may be surrounded by two coils, with their magnetic poles in opposition.
