PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide surface-treated carbon black, and to provide a new resist composition for black matrix containing the above carbon black, having a large coloring power and masking power and an excellent electrical insulation. SOLUTION: This carbon black is obtained by treating the surface of carboxy group-containing carbon black with a carbodiimido group-containing compound. The other objective resist composition for black matrix contains the above carbon black.
