Devices (10) are disclosed comprising a substrate in the form of an elongated web having on a surface thereof a linear array of chemical compounds and markings on the elongated web indicating segments of the linear array comprising groups of one or more chemical compounds of the linear array. In certain embodiments the devices (10) comprise a severable housing (12), a linear array (16) of features (18) within the housing, and markings (20) on the housing indicating segments (24) of the linear array comprising groups of one or more features of the linear array. Usually, the housing is an enclosed microchannel (14). The device may be employed for conducting an assay for one or more analytes suspected of being in a sample. <IMAGE>
