PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a 2-phthalimido-3-phosphonopropionic acid ester compound and to provide a method by which the compound is simply produced in good yield. SOLUTION: The method for producing the 2-phthalimido-3-phosphonopropionic acid ester compound represented by general formula (1) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>represent each an alkyl group, an aryl group, an alkoxy group or the like; R<SP>3</SP>represents hydrogen, an alkyl group, an aryl group or the like; and R<SP>4</SP>represents an alkyl group, an aryl group or the like) is carried out as follows.
