The method involves packing an address value and associated parameterizing value into a telegram of a cyclic service in a control unit (SPS). The telegram is transmitted to a field device (F0) e.g. fill level measuring device. The address value and the associated parameterizing value are determined from the received telegram in the field device. The parameterizing value is written into the storage address in the field device. The address value is Slot/Index identification.
