<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect a failure in a microcomputer by simple communication. <P>SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus includes a plurality of microcomputers and processes input image data from a camera photographing a road surface in front of a vehicle by the plurality of microcomputers to specify shapes of lane marks (white line and the like) and positional relations to the vehicle and transmits a road parameter showing the above information to an external ECU. A main microcomputer filters the input image data to generate edge information and inputs the information to a sub-microphone. On receipt of the edge information, the sub-microcomputer calculates a road parameter on the basis of the received edge information and executes a prescribed homework operation so that the failure of the sub-microcomputer can be detected by the main microcomputer, and the sub-microcomputer transmits a homework operation result Y and a variable value C used in the homework operation, together with the road parameter.
