A process for the high-temperature steam-reforming of hydrocarbons in the presence of a steam-reforming catalyst which is arranged as a solid bed in a reforming reactor, which process is characterised in that the hydrocarbons are steam-reformed in a catalyst bed which comprises at least an upper and a lower layer, with the upper layer being provided with catalyst particles having a reduced activity for the steam-reforming of hydrocarbons.
