SUB-BAND CODING METHOD AND APPARATUS

The apparatus and method is for compressing video signal by using sub-band coding method and for sending signals in a band having higher energy distribution level so that the band compression effect is obtained. The method comprises the steps of: (a) dividing a video signal in three dimensionals; (b) selecting a low frequency spatial region for a first time band divided in the step (a); (c) selecting all sub-bands as stop region; (d) selecting a second time band as a sub-stop region; (e) selecting a third time band as a sub-moving region; (f) selecting a fourth time band as a moving region; (g) comparing energy bands of selected bands in the step (b) to (f) and selecting a band which has the highest energy level; and (h) multiplexing a low spatial frequency region value and the energy level selected in the step (g).
