A coal plough and a conveyer therefor are driven independently by controllable hydrodynamic couplings which are driven in parallel by an electric motor 1. Liquid is supplied to the inner periphery of the couplings by a pump 20 through independently controlled valves 22. Liquid is exhausted from the couplings through peripheral ports controlled by ring valves which are adjusted axially by servos 11 controlled by the respective valves 22. The plough is driven by way of a reduction and reversing gear 16, a servo 19 controlling the reversing gear being operable only when the associated hydraulic coupling is empty.
