A water-soluble mixed ether of cellulose which can be cross-linked, containing C1- 3 alkyl, C2- 4 hydroxy alkyl and allyl groups is prepared by the conventional introduction of the groups either simultaneously or in any order desired, preferably at raised temperatures and in the presence of an organic solvent.
