Potash is added to the working fluid of a MHD generator in sufficient quantity both to enhance conductivity and to combine with the sulphur oxides present in the fluid. The additional material is removed from the working fluid as potassium sulphate by washing with an aqueous solution of a mixture of potassium salts. The sulphate is extracted as ammonium sulphate in an ion-exchange process. The residue caustic potash solution is converted into potash and again added to the working fluid.
