The nitrogen-free organic compound may contain one or more reactive terminal groups such as carboxyl, hydroxyl, phosphonic acid or sulphonic acid. bound to an aliphatic or aromatic radical. The nitrogen-free organic compound may contain a high molecular weight ester and/or ether group and at least one hydroxyl group. The compound may be in a gaseous or liquid state during the treatment. The filaments or films may be stretched before the treatment process and allowed to shrink to a predetermined degree during the treatment. The treatment period may be 10<SP>-3</SP> to 1 second and the treatment temperature 180‹ to 240‹ C.
