The skip plant of the parent Specification 1,078,743 is modified in that the clamping jaws 15, 16 of the skip gate moving mechanism are arranged to engage the clamping rails 17 on the gate with a force that is increased as the gate is raised. The gate moving mechanism associated with each rail 17 comprises a rod 10 connected to a piston in a cylinder 7 and having a double sided toothed rack at its end remote from the piston, for engagement with pinions 13, 14 to which jaws 15, 16 are secured. The latter are provided with a profiled surface, the radius of which increases as the jaw is rotated to grip the rail. The rail 17 is guided via guides 18 between the jaws 15, 16 with clearance whereupon pistonrod 10 is extended under fluid pressure in the cylinder 7 and the jaws 15, 16 are rotated via the racks to grip the rail 17. The gripping mechanisms for the two rails 17 on the gate are connected together by a beam 8 and are lifted together to raise the skip gate. During this lifting, the weight of the gate tends to rotate the cam jaws 15, 16 into a tighter gripping position on the gate. A compression spring 9 under the piston aids the fluid pressure in lifting of the toothed rack and hence releasing of the jaws 15, 16 once the weight of the skip gate is removed from the jaws upon lowering of the gate. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown) each rail is gripped by jaws pivoted to the ends of pivoted levers which are arranged to pivot into a position of greater rail engaging force due to the levers moving to lift the gate. In a final embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown) each rail is gripped by a pair of jaws slidably mounted on converging guides which are themselves slidably mounted and connected to a lifting mechanism. During lifting the jaws are wedged into engagement with the rails, whereas in the unloaded condition the jaws are spring biased into a position in which they permit the rails to pass therebetween with clearance. |
