In a paper-calendering apparatus a stationary deflecting member is provided for reversing the direction of a paper web between successive passes of the web between the calendering rolls, the deflecting member being in the form of a hollow bar 1 having a smoothly curved convex surface for passage of the web 4, means being provided for the admission of steam to the interior of the bar and steam outlet means 7 being provided along the generatrix of the surface at which maximum contact pressure with the web occurs or adjacent thereto. The hollow deflecting bar 1 is preferably made of sheet metal, e.g. steel, elements 5, 6 welded to an outer steam tube 8. An inner steam tube 10 is provided coaxially with the tube 8, the steam outlets 13, 14 of the tubes 10, 8 being directed away from each other to ensure even distribution of steam. The steam outlet 14 of the tube 8 is also directed away from the steam outlet 7 of the bar 1. The bar 1 preferably has a smaller radius of curvature in the region of paper web entry than in the region of paper web exit. The paper web exit region may be cooled by means of a cooling air jacket within the bar, or a perforated pipe outside the bar directing cool air onto the web. A thermal insulating layer may alternatively be provided within the bar 1. The position of the bar 1 may be adjusted about an axis disposed eccentrically relative to the curved surface, i.e. about the axis of a steam entry pipe 11. Means may also be provided for masking the edges of the steam exit 7 not covered by passing paper web. |
