Sensing devices 60 which detect the presence of work pieces 14 at stations 16 of a reciprocating conveyer are operative to return to forwarding position only those of carriages 32-34 which precede an empty station. Each sensing device 60 is pivotally mounted on the conveyer structure 17 and is counterbalanced to normally assume the position shown to the left of Fig. 1. Its lower portion 67 is engageable with dogs 52, which are pivoted to the carriages and which may be engaged by abutments 56 on a reciprocable drive member 24. Also pivotally mounted on the carriages are object-engaging pushers 42 having counter-weighted tail portions 47. Fig. 5 shows drive member 24 approaching the end of a return stroke. Station 16-3 being empty, the device 60 at this station has pivoted to the shown position and the dog 52 on the preceding carriage 33 has been allowed to engage the appropriate abutment 56 so that, on the return stroke, carriage 33 is being moved to a position where its pusher 42 is ready for forwarding the workpiece now at station 16-3. Since a workpiece was located at station 16-4 the dog 52 of carriage 34 was disabled by the sensing device 60 at that station and carriage 34 remains stationary. Carriage 32 is given return movement by the abutting carriage 33 and on the forwarding movement of the drive member 24, all carriages in advance of the empty station 16-3 will be given forwarding movement. |
