Web coating apparatus in which a bead is formed between a liquid lift roller and the web, comprises means within the bead for stabilizing the bead. In a preferred embodiment, the stabilizing means comprises a taut wire or rod, 24. The lift roller 14 is partially immersed in a trough 12 of liquid 13 and is rotated in a direction opposite to the direction of travel of the web. The web 10 is guided round support roller 11 in spaced relation with the lift roller 14, the distance between the two rollers being variable. The stabilizing rod or wire 24 is preferably situated adjacent the exit of the web from the coating zone.
