A crusher is provided with a pair of crushing members, e.g. the bowl liner 1 and mantle 2 of a gyratory crusher, Fig. 6, or the upper and lower jaw plates 24, 25 of a jaw crusher Fig. 7, wherein opposed surfaces are shaped so that the gap comprises a first material feed-receiving zone Z 1 formed by downwardlyconverging portions of the crushing surfaces, a second zone Z 2 where other portions of the surfaces are parallel, a third zone Z 3 with first increasing and then decreasing passage cross-section between the surfaces, and a fourth zone Z 1 where further portions of the surfaces are parallel to each other.
