[Also in Division H1] An electrode comprises a catalyst consisting of a metal of the platinum group deposited on a carrier which is an intimate mixture of nickel or nickel boride together with copper, and optionally at least one metal of Fe, Ag, W or Co. In an example, a sintered nickel substrate is immersed in an aqueous solution of nickel nitrate and copper nitrate, and the salts are then reduced with hydrazine hydrate. The substrate is then immersed in butyl alcohol containing palladium chloride and HCl. In another example, a mixture of nickel boride and copper are deposited on active carbon by adding an aqueous solution of nickel nitrate and copper nitrate to active carbon and reducing with sodium borohydride. Pt. is then deposited and the thus treated active carbon and a fluorocarbon resin binder are moulded under pressure with a metal screen disposed centrally thereof. |
