A plasticizer has a rotatable plasticizing member 41 and a rotatable feed screw 31 the cross-sections of which and of the housing bore 16 are all substantially equal; the feed screw forces plastics particles into a plasticizing zone 58 where a small portion is held against the plasticizing surface 57 by the compacted mass of material and plasticized by frictional heat, while voltaile matter is withdrawn across the whole interface of the small portion and the compacted mass and evacuated through conduits 28, 29. Placicized material is discharged through the annular space 53 and outlet 56 (see also Fig. 2, not shown). The barrel 13 may be heated adjacent the feed opening 21 and cooled adjacent the plasticizing element 41. |
