Leak Visual Warning and Detection Device

[Also in Divisions B1 and G1] A leak detection and visual warning device for signalling by means of a smoke tell-tale 11 the occurrence of chlorine leaking from a conduit 1 or a container, comprises a ribbon of an absorbent material soaked with ammonia solution and an elongated hollow envelope enclosing the ribbon. The envelope consists of a plastics film selected from the group consisting of polyamide resins formed by the condensation of dibasic organic acids with diamines, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene polyester and cellulose acetate. The device, in the form of a tape 2, is wound around the conduit so that any escaping chlorine penetrates the envelope and combines with the ammonia to form a visible wisp of ammonium chloride gas. In a second embodiment, a second conduit 6 surrounds the tape wound conduit and the ammonium chloride gas formed as a result of a leak is viewed through a sight glass 8 in a conduit 7. An electrochemical detector 9 may also be used. The absorbent material is preferably cotton but asbestos or fibre glass may be used.
