Wire rod is worked-up, directly from the rolling mill outlet, by means of a process which eliminates at the same time the patenting and the pickling operations. The wire rod is subjected to rapid cooling to a temp. between 500 and 850 degrees C. and is wound into loose coils. The latter are introduced into a bath of water brought to a temp. 75% higher than the boiling point, expressed in degree C. The bath contains materials in suspension and/or in soln. the presence of which is pref. capable of reinforcing the pickling power of the bath, or renders possible an electrolytic pickling. The materials in suspension and/or in soln. in the water assure a removal of heat from the wire so that the allotropic transformation can be effected, at least partially, in an isotropic manner. The bath may consist of an aqs. soln. of a salt such as calcium chloride; or the suspended materials or those in soln. may be such as to render the wire passive. These different treatments may be effected in at least two baths. The product obtained is of excellent quality, very homogeneous and suitably pickled.
|
