Apparatus for the production of mats of cut fibres, particularly glass fibres, includes a roller cutting device 18 disposed above a receiving surface 11 moving in direction A and mounted on a support arm 19 which is oscillated across the width of the surface 11. The roller cutting device (Fig. 3) consists of a cutting roller 54 which has radially extending blades and a coacting cushion roller 61 which is removably mounted in a movable yoke member 64 linked for movement with a piston 65 slidable within a pneumatic cylinder 66. The support arm 19 is mounted on pivot 20 and is oscillated by a cam driven cam follower 27 linked with the arm 19 through rod 25 and pin 24 engaging in slot 24. The strands or rovings are guided to the nip of the rollers through a plurality of flexible pipes 73-75 whose outlet ends adjacent the nip are either fixed on a support 76 carried by arm 19 for oscillation therewith, or else are fixed on a second oscillatable support arm having an amplitude of oscillation greater than that of arm 19. The strands or rovings are drawn into pipes 73-75 by air introduced into the nozzle ends 77 of the pipes. |
