The device has a main coolant circuit (1) traversing a motor (2) and connected to a circulating pump (3). A derivation branch (8) is supplied with a coolant irrespective of the position of a thermostatic valve (4) and is connected to a contact point in the main circuit equipped with a restrictor (6) and an auxiliary coolant circuit (11) of a body of a motor vehicle. The auxiliary coolant circuit incorporates a radiator of the main coolant circuit when the thermostatic valve is closed. An independent claim is also included for a cooling method for a motor vehicle.
