The impact strength and resistance to solvent attack of a polyphenylene oxide is improved by dispersing a polyolefin in the polyphenylene oxide. The polyphenylene oxide may have the formula <FORM:1106135/C3/1> where R is hydrogen, a hydrocarbon radical, a halohydrocarbon radical having at least two carbon atoms between the halogen atom and the nucleus, a hydrocarbonoxy radical, or a halohydrocarbonoxy radical having at least two carbon atoms between the halogen atom and the nucleus, R1 is the same as R or is a halogen atom, and n is an integer greater than 100. The polyolefin may be incorporated in an amount of from 1% to 10% by weight of the total composition. A plasticizer may be included e.g. chlorinated biphenols and mineral oils. In Examples a polyethylene, a polypropylene and a polyethylene-polypropylene copolymer, are blended with a poly-(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)-oxide; mineral oil is used as a plasticizer. |
