Reductive dimerisation of an alpha,beta-alkenically unsaturated ester or nitrile by means of an amalgam reducing system in a homogeneous reaction medium which contains a proton source which acts with the amalgam to form the reducing system, the reaction, medium contains >50 weight % of a polar aprotic solvent and a dissolved, non-reacting, completely alkylated onium salt. The yield of dimer is increased. These are particularly acrylonitrile, giving adiponitrile as product, and methyl or ethyl acrylate, giving methyl or ethyl adipate. |
