An article comprises at least one wooden block having a surface extending transversely to the grain of the wood and having a series of spaced decorative elements affixed to the surface of the or each wooden block in the grain of the wood. The article may comprise a series of wooden blocks mounted in side-by-side relationship to define a parquet-like surface on a backing of rigid material, having a series of spaced, ring-like beads affixed to their upper surfaces and wherein each wooden block comprises a cross-grained layer in which the grain of the wood extends transversely to the decorated surface. The backing may be unlaminated and may be of wood, synthetic plastic material or metal, with the wood blocks mounted in cavities recessed into the backing such that a flush outer surface is provided. The blocks may be adhesively secured to each other and to the backing. The backing may be laminated, e.g. a bottom layer of plywood, a layer of compressed wood-chip material sandwiched between the wooden block layer and the plywood layer and adhesively secured thereto. The beads may be directly affixed to the wooden blocks or within mating indentations in the blocks, and may be multicoloured and proud of the surface of the blocks. The beads may be driven into the blocks or into the mating indentations, e.g. by hammering. A surrounding frame may be provided around the blocks and around the backing. The frame may be made of wood, with the grain of the wood extending transversely across the grain of the wooden blocks. The upper surface of the blocks may be coated with a moisture-proof coating, such as an epoxy resin sealer and varnish.</p> |
