A shield 35 is attached to the outlet of a corona discharge device producing ionized gas for altering the electrostatic condition of photosensitive material to shield the material from any actinic radiation generated by the discharge, said shield having a convergent passageway 62 with sections 59, 60, 61 at increasing angles of inclination. Pressurized gas, e.g. air, introduced through a flexible connection 22 and passing through apertures 29 in a plastics sleeve 28 is ionized by a corona discharge between a needle 18 and an apertured plate 23 held in position by a spring ring 26. The shield 35 is attached to a metallic sleeve 23 of the discharge device by a set screw 38. The passage 62 is convergent in the cross-section shown and divergent in the orthogonal cross-section, terminating in a narrow slit 64. A breather hole 65 is provided to reduce turbulence, and the walls of the passage 62 may be sand-blasted, painted black, or otherwise treated to eliminate reflection of light. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) and elongated shield with a convergent passage comprising two sections at increasing angles of inclination is recured to an outlet slit of an elongated casing enclosing a linear array of corona needles. |
