A polyamide may be prepared by polymerizing an o -lactam having at least 4 ring carbon atoms in the presence of a basic catalyst and a cocatalyst containing the group <FORM:1115558/C3/1> The cocatalyst may contain 1-600 such group linked directly in a chain or ring, the remaining phosphorus valencies being satisfied by halogen, -OR, -SR, or -NRR1 groups where R and R1 are aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon groups. The reaction mixture may contain 0.1-10 mole per cent of catalyst and 0.02-5 mole per cent of cocatalyst. Polymerization may be effected in a mould at a temperature between the m.p. of the monomer and that of the polymer, e.g. 120-170 DEG C. In examples, e -caprolactam and pyrrolidone are polymerized in the presence of NaOMe, KOH, NaH, PhMgBr, BuLi or NaOH as catalysts, phosphonitrilic chloride trimer, phosphonitrilic chloride tetramer, phosphonitrilic chloride polymer, hexabutoxy triazatriphosphorine, hexaphenoxy triazatriphosphorine, hexathiophenoxy triazatriphosphorine, N - benzoyl trichlorophosphine imide, N - methyl trichlorophosphine imide dimer, N - phenyl trichlorophosphine imide dimer and/or PCl3=NPCl2=NPCl4 as cocatalyst and MoS2 as filler and under a nitrogen atmosphere. |
