A cylinder-and-dial machine has a stop motion which comprises a source of light 16 the rays of which are reflected from the needle bed surfaces in the event of a needle becoming devoid of a stitch, such that the reflected light impinges on a photoelectric cell 27, 28 coupled through a suitable electric network to the control system of the drive of the machine. Where deliberate mis-stitch effects are required for patterning or marking purposes the corresponding portion of the needle bed is darkened or rendered non reflective to avoid the photoelectric cell responding to the absence of a stitch. |
