In a process which comprised cultivating in a broth a micro-organism capable of growing on at least some straight chain hydrocarbons, in the presence of a hydrocarbon feedstock which consists at least in part of straight chain hydrocarbons, an aqueous nutrient medium and a gas containing free oxygen, the cultivation is carried out continuously with the introduction of hydrocarbon at a rate such that the concentration of hydrocarbon in the broth is less than 0À5 gram/ litre. Examples and comparative experiments wherein the exess of n-paraffin in the broth amounted to 0À35, 0À49, 5À2 and 10À6 grams per litre, respectively, demonstrate that higher yields and greater utilization of hydrocarbon are obtained when the concentration of hydrocarbon is restricted as given above. Preferably the cultivation is carried out, after start-up, without the addition to the broth of microorganism. Hydrocarbon feedstock: paraffins and/or olefins, particularly normal paraffin fractions obtained by molecular sieve treatment of a distillation fraction of petroleum origin e.g. kerosine or gas oils. Many species of microorganisms are mentioned. The examples and comparative experiments relate to the cultivation of Candida lipolytica on C14-C17 normal paraffins. |
