A variable area stop is associated with the film holder, the screened areas being covered with plates of X ray absorbent material which define a window within the conical X ray beam and can be introduced before exposure starts and remain in position throughout the exposure. An image intensifier forms a part of the monitoring system used in an automatic exposure control loop.
