Catalyst for esterification of alcohols

The catalyst is 4-dimethylamino-pyridine. Pref. the catalyst is present in quantities of 0.01-1 molar equivalents. Pref. tert. amines, esp tfriethylamine are added. Pref. the reaction is carried out in the presence of an inert solvent. Sterically hindered and previously unreactive alcohols may be used reaction times are reduced and yields are very high.
