Apparatus for making coffee or other beverages, as e.g., in Fig. 1, comprises a water-heating chamber 11 connected to a supply of water, means 10 for controlling the supply means 16 for heating the water, an infusion chamber 23, a pump 20 for conveying hot water from the water-heating chamber to the infusion chamber, means 27 for controlling the discharge of prepared beverage from the infusion chamber, and an electrical control means for operating the pump, the water supply control and the beverage discharge control in timed relationship to one another so that fresh water is not supplied to the waterheating chamber until a predetermined amount of hot water has been pumped to the infusion chamber, and such that the prepared beverage is not discharged from the infusion chamber until after a predetermined infusion period, the electrical control including a thermostat for preventing operation of the pump before the water in the water-heating chamber has reached a predetermined infusion temperature. The water supply is preferably from a cold water tank 4 and the hot water tank 11 may comprise a subsidiary open tank 12 with a plain bottom formed by a circular plate 14 and a perforated wall 15. The contents of the infuser may be agitated to assist infusion, e.g. an air pump 39 may be arranged to blow air into the infusion chamber via a pipe 40, this agitation being operable by the electrical control means in timed relationship with the other components of the apparatus. The infusion chamber 23 may be hemispherical and may contain a sponge ring 22 arranged to spray hot water via the pump on to the material in the chamber. The discharge of beverage may be controlled by an outlet slide valve 27 operable by a solenoid 28. A filter device or a removable filter basket is preferably introduced below the infusion chamber. A flask may be mounted on a hot plate to receive the filtered coffee. To prevent premature discharge of coffee a weighbridge may be associated with the hot plate and the solenoid. |
