Disposable medicinal syringe ampoule for use in a syringe holder has a needle attached to one end, and the other end is closed by a piston plug. At least the front end of the ampoule is covered by a wrapper which is stripped off by the action of inserting the ampoule into the syringe holder, the needle projecting through the wrapper and coming into the operating position. The insertion of the ampoule into the syringe holder is simple and rapid and avoids manipulation of the needle with attendant sterility problems. The wrapping is pref. a plug (pref. of rubber) sitting on the point of the needle, and a plastic-foil sleeve heat-sealed to the rim of the plug and extending back to the ampoule body, to which it is likewise sealed. The syringe holder is pref. so designed that insertion of the ampoule into the holder pushes the needle through the plug so that the plug slides back along the needle taking the rest of the wrapping with it.
