摘要 1277840 Producing glass beads CATAPHOTE CORP 11 Nov 1970 [22 April 1970] 53664/70 Heading C1M Glass beads are produced by directing solidified glass fibres into a heated zone so that molten glass beads are formed on the ends of the fibres, and the beads are separated from the fibre ends and cooled to form solid beads. The glass fibres 24 are drawn through a perforated orifice plate 23 of Ti, Pt or ceramic in the bottom of a glass melting tank 10 by means of two rollers 26 and 27, the fibres being guided to and from the rollers by guide blocks 44 and 45 located above and below the rollers, respectively and each having a plurality of orifices therein, one for each fibre 4. Roller 26 is rotatably driven by a motor 43 acting through a pulley and belt 40, while the roller 27 is spring biased against roller 26. Each roller has a resilient covering of, for example, neoprene rubber. A burner 50 located below the block 45, which produces a high temperature, low velocity flame, thus heating the glass fibre ends to produce molten beads, and providing a gas flow which causes the beads to separate from the fibre ends and directs them into a liquid quenching medium 56. The quenching medium may be water, oil or an organic solvent. The rollers 26, 27 may be cooled either by an internal liquid or gas cooling means or by spraying the space between the rollers with water. The production of the glass fibres can be a separate step and the fibres subsequently being fed through a guide block into the heating zone.
