Hydrogen is separated from gas mixtures containing at least 50% hydrogen by means of a continuous sequence of repeated absorptiondesorption cycles using palladium of bulk density of at least 2.5 g/cc as absorbent, in which absorption is performed at high pressure and desorption at low pressure, e.g. atmospheric pressure, the process temperature, pressures of absorption and desorption, the ratio of the duration of the absorption and desorption steps of each cycle and the duration of each cycle being correlated so as to produce 45-80%, preferably 60-70%, saturation of the palladium with hydrogen at the end of each desorption step. In general, it is preferred to keep the other parameters constant with cycle times of 5-10 seconds, temperatures of about 220‹C, and absorptiondesorption pressure differentials of about 15 atmospheres, and to adjust the ratio of the duration of the absorption and desorption steps, suitably so as to provide an output of >1.6, preferably >1.9, cc. H 2 /g.Pd/sec. of each cycle. Between the absorption and desorption steps, a very brief purge step is preferably interposed. The palladium is suitably used in the form of sponge or powder; alternatively the alloy described in British Specification 1147010 may be used.
