High strength road surfacing material is produced by admixing cement to asphalt and opt. adding expanded clay or slate, to prevent cracking at temp. below zero. Synthetic resins can also be added. The addition of expanded clay or slate results in a self-roughening of the road surface with time, as the binder is wearing down to a certain extent, and the clay or slate partices are less affected and protrude from the bed. |
