A pneumatic tyre having a radial ply carcass 10 and breaker layer 12 is characterized by having a continuous layer of rubber 14 of substantially constant thickness and of evolute meridian width L defined by the equation 2M-S#L#2M-C in which M is the meridian width of the carcass between the beads, S is the width of the breaker layer, and C is the width of the tread 13, over the whole internal surface of the carcass, the beads, and the external surface of the sides of the carcass up to the shoulders of the tyre where it is connected to the sides of the tread, the edges of the layer of rubber falling short of the edges of the breaker layer. Layers 19 of rubber may be provided at the beads 15. The cords of the ply or plies of the carcass may be arranged such that their ends 18 are located either at or short of or beyond the ends of the rubber layer 14. In the latter case, the ends may be located beneath the breaker layer. The ends of the rubber layer 14 may be located either above or below the edges of the tread. In one modification, a cushion of rubber may be placed between the edges of the carcass ply or plies below the breaker layer. The tyre may be made by winding the rubber layer 14 and carcass ply or plies, separately or as a pre-assembled strip, on to a cylindrical tyre-building drum having an expandable surface to form a cylindrical carcass skeleton, positioning the bead wires 11, radially expanding the central part of the skeleton between the bead wires to a toroidal shape whilst bringing the bead wires nearer to each other, placing the breaker layer and tread on the crown of the toroidal carcass, and folding the side parts of the ply or plies and rubber layer about the bead wires until the edges of the rubber layer are adjacent the edges of the tread. |
