A fuel cell electrode 11 comprises tungsten bronze and a noble metal as gas-adsorbing materials 37, and a current collector 35, the noble metal being Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt or mixtures or alloys thereof. The tungsten bronze may constitute 9-50% of the total weight of bronze plus noble metal. It may be of formula M x WO 3 , where M is an alkali or alkaline earth metal, e.g. sodium and x is between 0 and 1. The noble metal may be dispersed on the bronze or dispersed on another support which is mixed with the bronze. 34 mg. of Pt per sq. cm. may be used. The gas-adsorbing material may be stuck together with 3-50% of a binder, e.g. PTFE, which has a critical surface tension up to 32 dynes per cm. The current collector 35 may be wire gauze. The electrode may be prepared by spraying an aqueous suspension of PTFE on to an embossed Al foil preheated to 120-150‹ C. The coating is then heated to 350‹ C. and cooled before an aqueous slurry of noble metal and tungsten bronze is applied and the structure slowly heated up to 250-350‹ C. Two members prepared in this way are used to sandwich a current collector, the assembly being compressed and heated. Finally the Al foils are dissolved in NaOH. The electrode shown in Fig. 2 additionally has a hydrophobic surface film 38. Such an electrode may be used as anode in fuel cell 10, the cathode comprising Pt bonded with PTFE and having a hydrophobic film on each surface and the electrolyte being H 2 SO 4 . The fuel may be produced in reformer 32 from a hydrocarbon and water and may include carbon monoxide. The oxidant may be oxygen gas or air, end plate 20 being omitted when air is used. The cell is held together by bolts 22 surrounded by insulating sleeves 24 and washers 25.
