[Also in Divisions Cl, C4 and C5] Cast iron stools and ladles used in steel moulding are coated, e.g. by spraying, with a composition comprising refractory particles suspended in an aqueous medium containing 0.1-4% by wt. Hectorite clay. The refractory may be silica, alumina, zirconia or combinations theireof, and the liquid a colloidal silica sol, aqueous sodium or potassium silicate or an aqueous phosphate. As anti-freeze additives ethylene or propylene glycol, glycerine morpholine or diethylamine may be included. In Example III an aqueous slurry of fused silica and a colloidal silica sol plus Hectorite is sprayed on a cast iron stool to form a 1/16 inch coating, and in Example IV an aqueous slurry of alumina and Hectorite is applied to a ladle. |
