In a method of assembling an electric motor with a motor driven unit wherein the motor and unit are drivingly interengaged by a shaft 12 and wherein the unit has a casing 14 and the motor has a rotor and a stator core, an inner peripheral wall of the core defining a bore 38, the core is arranged relative to the casing so that the bore axis is generally parallel to the rotational axis of the shaft 12, a wall surface is provided in the bore and is moved radially outwardly into engagement with the core wall while maintaining the moving wall surface accurately concentric with the shaft rotational axis to bring the bore axis into coincidence with the rotational axis. The motor stator 24 is supported on lugs 20 of the casing 14 and is loosely secured thereto by bolts 28. The wall surface comprises an expandible collet 46 having a tapered bore 50 and longitudinal slots 64, 66 to allow for radial expansion. The collet is inserted in the bore 38 and is axially located by a circumferential shoulder 56. An arbor 48 is inserted in the collet, a pilot bore 70 accommodating the shaft 12, and is moved downwardly sufficiently to expand the collet against the core 30, whereupon the bolts 28 are tightened to secure the stator concentrically with the shaft axis. The arbor is then extracted to release the collet, which is removed and the rotor is then inserted in the stator to complete assembly of the motor. For automated production, the collet 46 and arbor 48 can be moved sequentially by a double-acting ram. The bolts 28 may be tightened in opposed pairs or simultaneously to eliminate side thrust from unequal load on individual bolts. |
