An oral iron preparation, in dosage unit form, comprises per dosage unit: (a) 10-200 mg. of ferro-ions in the form of an iron-II salt the anion of which is physiologically tolerable, (b) a physiologically tolerable acid that is solid under administration conditions and has an acidity superior to that of carbonic acid and (c) an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal carbonate or bicarbonate in an amount which may be equivalent to or less than the amount of acid. The iron salt is suitably iron chloride, iron funarate, iron succinate, iron citrate, iron lactate, iron carbonate or iron gluconate. The acid used is suitably citric acid, tartaric acid or ascorbic acid. |
