An aircraft aerial system is constituted by arrays of slots in linearly-extending waveguides. Electronically controlled phase-shifting elements are interposed between slots, so that the direction of the beam from an array may be varied. A transmitting aerial is provided along the longitudinal axis of the aircraft, and at least one receiving aerial is provided along the axis of greatest thickness of each wing. For aircraft with wings having no sweepback, the receiving aerials may consist of a pair of arrays of slots along the wings, and a pair of arrays of slots along the longitudinal axis of the aircraft, the latter being decoupled from the transmitting aerial. For aircraft with sweptback or delta wings 5, 6, Fig. 4, the receiving aerials may consist of two parallel arrays of slots 7, 8 and 9, 10 along each wing. In this way the receiving aerials produce overlapping and crossed radiation patterns 7a, 8a and 9a, 10a which explore the space 4 covered by the transmitting aerial beam. |
